The Professional in Human Resources – International (PHRi ™ ) is a globally relevant credential for HR professionals who mainly provide HR services in one country. It is designed to validate professional-level core human resource knowledge and skills. The credential demonstrates mastery of generally accepted technical and operational HR principles. Through demonstrated knowledge, the credential enhances the credibility of HR professionals and the organizations they serve.

What Is the Exam Format & Length?
Exam time: 3 hours and 15 minutes.
Exam length: 145 scored questions (mostly multiple-choice) + 25 pretest questions
Language: English (also available in Spanish - Castilian)
Computer-based exam at a Pearson VUE testing center

What Is Covered?

The Professional in Human Resources – International (PHRi) certification is designed for the HR professional who

  • Focuses on implementing HR programs;
  • Handles operational matters;
  • Reports to another HR professional within the organization;
  • Has at least one to four years of professional-level work experience, depending on education, handling a wide range of general HR responsibilities;
  • Holds a job that focuses on HR department responsibilities rather than on the whole organization; and
  • Follows policies and guidelines for decision-making.
  • Seeks to gain credibility through increasing HR knowledge and experienc

How Much Does It Cost?

Exam Fee*: $395 + Application Fee: $100

*Once an exam application is approved, no refunds will be made whether a candidate withdraws or no longer wishes to take the exam.

To make certification more accessible worldwide, HRCI offers a global allowance for the PHRi/SPHRi exam which provides the exam at a reduced fee.  Applicants who live in low-income, lower middle-income, and upper middle-income economies as defined on the World Bank Country and Lending Group list will pay a reduced exam fee of $200 USD/ $300 USD.

When Can I Take the Exam?

Testing for the PHRi is available year-round, subject to test center availability.

How Do I Remain Certified?

Your PHRi certification is valid for three years after testing. To maintain your PHRi credential, you must earn 60 recertification credits over the three-year time span or retake the exam. 

The HR Certification Institute® (HRCI®) does not endorse any particular preparation program or offering. HRCI encourages prospective certification holders to use a variety of resources that reflect their learning styles and needs. Purchasing a certification product is NOT required and HRCI does not guarantee that an individual will pass based on the purchase of a certification preparation product.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Minimum of 1 year of professional-level experience in an HR position with a Master’s degree or global equivalent. OR
  • Minimum of 2 years of professional-level experience in an HR position with a bachelor’s degree or global equivalent. OR
  • Minimum of 4 years of professional-level experience in an HR position with a less than a bachelor’s degree.
